XANDER SCHAUFFELE has claimed his second career Major after winning the 2024 Open at nine under par.

The American won the PGA Championship in May and now has the Claret Jug to cap off a phenomenal summer.

Justin Rose and Shane Lowry were in the running on the final day, amongst many others, but they finished tied second and sixth respectively.

Schauffele's triumph in Scotland sealed an American clean sweep for all of this season's four majors for the first time in 42 years.

Rose hails Schauffele as 'great champion'

Gracious in defeat, Justin Rose has labelled Xander Schauffele as a 'great champion' who makes winning look easy.

In an interview with the BBC, the Englishman who tied for second spot at this year's Open Championship was quick to pay tribute to the competition's deserved winner.

"He's a guy at the top of his game. A guy that has all the attributes that make him a great player and a great champion," Rose said of Schauffele.

"He's obviously now learning that winning is easy. He has a lot of horsepower, do you know what I mean? In the sense of he's good with a wedge, he's great with a putter, he hits the ball a long way and obviously his iron play is strong. So he's got a lot of weapons out there.

"I think probably one of his most unappreciated ones is his mentality. He's such a calm guy out there. I don't know what he's feeling, but he certainly makes it look very easy. He plays with a freedom, which kind of tells you as a competitor that he's probably not feeling a ton of the bad stuff.

"He's got a lot of runway ahead and a lot of exciting stuff ahead, I'msure."

He's obviously now learning that winning is easy. He has a lot of horsepower. He's good with a wedge, he's great with a putter, he hits the ball a long way and obviously his iron play is strong. So he's got a lot of weapons out there.

    Extra! Read all about it!

Our man at Royal Troon, David Facey has filed his report on the final round of the Open Championship that saw Xander Schauffele claim victory from England's Justin Rose.

At nine under par, Xander Schauffele's winning margin over playing partner Justin Rose and 54-hole leader Billy Horschel was only two shots. That is misleading - the American always seemed to be in total control in the closing stages. Rose registered the second best score on the day - a four under 67 that might have been good enough for victory in most years. And it might have been a close-run thing if England's 2013 US Open champion had not suffered cruel lip-outs at 12 and 13, with putts that looked certain to drop until the damned hole got in the way.

Rose rues 'best golf and no trophy'

A rueful Justin Rose has revealed that this week will be a tough one to get over after he came so close to claiming his second major title.

The 43-year-old Englishman pushed Xander Schauffele all the way to the 18th but couldn't match the American after a run of bad luck at the start of the back nine.

"When I walked off the course it hit me. The dream's been alive all week and I felt that I did an awesome job of coming out and really getting amongst it from the word go," he told the BBC.

"I got off to a strong start and felt like I played my way into the tournament.

"I saw glimpses of my name at the top of the leaderboard at times, did some of the hard work on the back nine, but Xander got that momentum.

"He's an ice cold competitor and one of the best players in the world and it was tough to keep up.

This will be a tough one but a great one. I played in some of the hardest weather all week. I played some of the best golf but it didn't quite add up to the trophy.

    Xander hails 'dream come true'

An exhausted Xander Schauffele says that his accomplishments in Ayrshire are yet to really sink in.

The American has revealed that his mind is still on the course and the holes that he has conquered over the past four days, but admits he can't wait to have a drink out of the Claret Jug with his dad.

This win means a lot. It is something that all of us play for and it really is a dream come true. It definitely hasn't sunk n yet. I can't wait to sit back and have a moment with this Claret Jug.

  • Schauffele called on PGA experience

Open winner and now Champion Golfer of the Year Xander Schauffele has admitted that his experience at the PGA Championship stood him in good stead for the final round at Royal Troon.

The American showed no sign of nerves as he pulled away from the pack on the back nine, and revealed afterwards that his first major win a couple of months ago kept him at ease.

I thought it would help me and it actually did. I had a sense of calm that I didn't have at the PGA, and I felt collected. I told my caddie Austin that when we were coming down the stretch, and he said he was ready to puke on the 18th tee - but I told myself to 'hit it down there like you have all day' and I kept moving along.

    Xan-tastic Schauffele sees records tumble

Just like his final round at Valhalla when he claimed the PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele shot a Sunday 65 to come out on top.

And by winning his second major in three months, the 30-year-old American ensures that the history books will have to be rewritten.

    Schauffele's win means:

    • he is the first player to win the PGA Championship and Open Championship in the same season since 2014.
    • he is the first player to win two majors in a season since 2015.
    • it is the first time Americans have won all four majors in the year since 1982.
    • he is the seventh American to win in the last 8 Open Championships at Royal Troon.

    Horschel ties for second spot

A birdie on the 18th means that Billy Horschel ties with Justin Rose for second spot.

The American was the leader going into the final round, and a solid showing of 68 has been a fine way to end an impressive week.

And yet despite leading after three rounds and finishing joint-second, Horschel was never really in the reckoning as Rose, Lawrence and eventual champion Xander Schauffele fought it out.

    Xander Schauffele wins Open Championship

    And now it is confirmed!

With Thriston Lawrence and Billy Horschel unable to make up the three shots after their drives on the 18th, Xander Schauffele is officially crowned as the 152nd Open Champion.

In fact, his name has already been engraved on the Claret Jug.

It's been a marvellous round of golf from the American, who becomes the first player to win two majors in a season since Jordan Spieth in 2015.

    Rose finishes with a birdie

It's a wonderful ending on 18 for Justin Rose too!

The Englishman sinks a final 15-footer to end on 67 for the round, and seven-under for the competition.

It moves him into second place outright, and it's the least the 43-year-old deserves.

Rose embraces playing partner Xander Schauffele on the green, and congratulates him on his imminent success.

    Schauffele signs off with 65

Xander Schauffele stands over his ball on the 18th green at Royal Troon, knowing he's on the brink of glory.

Twenty-one feet from the hole, he takes his time and then putts.

It looks good! It looks great! It...it...it just turns at the final second and denies Schauffele a final birdie.

He holes out to finish with a sublime 65 that will see him crowned as the Open winner. It's not confirmed yet, but he is the champion-elect.

Rose and Schauffele find the green

The pair playing in Game 38 have been the ones to watch over the past couple of hours, and now Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele head to the 18th green together, both with a shot at one final birdie.

Leader - and soon to be Open champion - Schauffele takes the applause on route, but there is a wonderfully-warm response for Rose too. He has played some exquisite golf today.

    Brown books 2025 Open spot

Dan Brown misses a putt for par on the 18th, and within sees his overall score drop out of the red.

But the 29-year-old can be delighted with his week, and his par score for the Championship is enough to guarantee him a top ten spot and an automatic place at next year's tournament.

    Leader heads for the 18th

Xander Schauffele gives the 17th hole a scare with a birdie effort from 33 feet but is happy to settle for par.

I say happy, but there's barely a flicker of emotion on the American's face as he retrieves his ball and heads for the last.

This is a major champion fully focused on the job, and realises that there still work to do.

Justin Rose hasn't given up the fight, and gives himself a shot at an eagle with a driver off the deck at 16.

The Englishman fails to find the hole to claw back two shots, and so settles for the birdie...

...but Xander Schauffele then does likewise for a birdie four at the same hole.

    Lowry closes out with 68

Shane Lowry wasn't able to replicate his front nine heroics on the back nine, but at least there wasn't a repeat of yesterday's debacle.

A birdie on 17 means the Irishman atones for Saturday evening with a par score on holes 10-18 to leave him on four-under at the Championship.

All in all, Lowry can be pleased with a fine week's work.

    Rose keeps on pushing

Justin Rose continues to plug away on the back nine with some superb stroke play - but once again luck is against him.

His putt at 15 looks perfect, only for the ball not to drift left as expected.

A wry smiles creeps across Rose's face as he tries to urge the ball in with a swipe of his hand.

Dame Laura Davies points out on commentary that both he and Schauffele have played brilliantly today but the difference has been the American's putts have dropped.

    Rose running out of luck

How different this evening could have been for Justin Rose?

The 43-year-old has played some fine golf today, but the golf gods have not been on his side in the last 45 minutes.

Three holes, three putts, three near misses.

If those shots had dropped at 12, 13 and 14 then the Englishman would have been level on eight-under with leader Xander Schauffele.

    Schau far, so good!

Is Xander Schauffele closing in on the Claret Jug!

The American is on one hell of a roll as he sinks a 12-foot putt for birdie at the par-three 14th.

Schauffele is now five-under for the last nine holes, and has the daylight of two shots at the top of the leaderboard.

The PGA Champion is firing his way through the supposedly-troublesome back nine, and the 152nd Open Championship is surely now his to lead.

    Lawrence gifts lead to Schauffele

And that's how quickly it can all change!

Thriston Lawrence draws gasps from the crowd around the 12th green as he fails to find the hole from 13 feet.

It's a first bogey of the day for the South African, and it means he passes over top spot.

Xander Schauffele is the fourth outright leader of the day. Can he do what Billy Horschel, Justin Rose and Lawrence were unable to do and hold on to it?
